Course Details

This course consists of 12 modules which focus on getting students to develop their own style and designs, while giving students valuable professional practice. As a City and Guilds accredited course, this is a comprehensive online Felt Making course. Not only will you teach essential techniques, you’ll also enhance your own creativity and design skills.

Course Modules

There are around 360 hours of course content and materials split across 12 modules. Here’s what you’ll learn:

  • Get proficient at the Felt basics including flat, patterned and pre felt.
  • Develop more advanced skills like washing machine, cobweb, 3D and hand embroidery techniques.
  • Learn how to incorporate other techniques like, Machine Embroidery on felt, needle felting, stiffening, nuno techniques.
  • Create your own design folio containing all of your designs, research and inspiration. This is a valuable folio which will help you to develop own personal styles and techniques.
  • Create two samples folio containing traditional and contemporary techniques samples.
  • Learn edging and decorative finishing techniques to add a professional looking finish to your pieces.
  • Create three a final assessment pieces. Choose from either a 3D functional item, a panel/hanging/quilt or a wearable art item.
  • Gain professional practise – produce a CV and professional profile, cost items, compile a business plan and present work for promotional purposes online.

Delivery & Assessment

The course is supplied as a distance learning course where course materials and tutor assessments are delivered digitally and work is returned to your tutor via digital presentation.

Your coursework will be reviewed by your tutor and periodically by an Internal Quality Assessor, to ensure the appropriate quality standard is maintained. You will be provided with written feedback in a timely fashion (usually within 10 days) and, if needed, you will be able to re-submit altered work. You can contact your tutor at any time to request your work to date be reviewed and suggestions for future progress be made.

Course Timescales

There is around 360 hours of course felt making content/materials and it is usual for students to take between 6-8 weeks to complete each module. Students can take up to 2 years to complete, however it is up to the individual student how quickly they wish to return work to their tutor for assessment.

A six-month contingency is available, to cover unforeseen issues such as illness, upon production of supporting documentation,  extending the course life to 30 months (2.5 years). The maximum for this extra contingency time is once during the course lifetime.

Aimed At

This course is aimed at crafters with a bit more crafting and felt making experience.  If you’re regularly completing projects using commercial patterns or kits and you have a fair, though not extensive understanding of different stitch techniques, we’d categorise you as having more experience than a beginner.

If you’ve been interested in felt making for a while, have attended a workshop or course and regularly read around your craft (magazines, books, articles) then you’re probably ready to take these more advanced courses. The reason we say this is because our Skill Stage three courses are in-depth courses that require you to research, read and study your subject. We will obviously support you with tasks but some students may find this difficult without previous knowledge and experience of more formal education.

This felting skill Stage 3 course is perfect for those with a business ambition. Our course includes an entire module called professional practise, which is aimed at getting you business ready. We teach valuable industry skills to really give you that professional, competitive edge.
